Sardarshahar was renamed in 1838 after Sardar Singh, son of Maharaja Ratan Singh of Bikaner, and it grew into a rich merchant town at the edge of the Thar. The traders' havelis, a famous marble clock tower and a busy temple circuit are still here. This list is for a day in town or a relaxed weekend.
1. Ichhapuran Balaji Mandir
Sardarshahar's best-known temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and built in the South Indian Dravidian style, which is unusual in this region. It was inaugurated in 2005 and is generally open from about 6 am to 9 pm. It is busiest on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Hanuman Jayanti.

2. Ghantaghar, the marble clock tower
The white-marble Ghantaghar is about 60 feet tall, and streets pass beneath it in all four directions. Locals proudly call it one of a kind. Visit in the evening, when the market around it is busiest.
3. The merchant havelis
Like the Shekhawati towns nearby, Sardarshahar has grand havelis built by trading families. Some that are often mentioned:
- Jammar Haveli (1873), known for its murals, including a frieze of the Pabuji legend, and its gold-painted rooms.
- Buddhmal Dugar Haveli, with a music hall of chandeliers and glass-and-gold work.
- Ramlal Anoopchand Dugar Haveli, with a library and ceilings painted like carpets.
- Havelis of the Chaudhary, Nahata, Malu and Gadhaiya families.
4. Shanti Peeth
On the same highway as Ichhapuran Balaji, Shanti Peeth is a calm Jain site that holds the samadhi of Acharya Mahapragya. Sardarshahar is also the birthplace of Acharya Mahashraman, the 11th head of the Jain Terapanth order, so the town is important to Jain pilgrims.
5. Rani Sati Temple and the old town temples
The Rani Sati Temple in Taal Maidan dates from the 18th century and draws big crowds on special days. The old town also has Shani, Satyanarayan, Nath ji and Sachchiyay Mata temples, an easy walking circuit on a winter morning.
6. Silver, crafts and sweets
Sardarshahar is known for its silver work: jewellery, utensils and decorative pieces made by local craftsmen. Woodwork and handicrafts are found in the old markets too. Don't leave without trying the local sweets from the town's mithai shops.

7. Gandhi Vidya Mandir
This large education campus, whose foundation stone was laid in 1955 by Dr Rajendra Prasad, India's first President, is part of the town's modern story. It now teaches more than 10,000 students, from kindergarten to PhD.
8. Day trips
- Tal Chhapar Blackbuck Sanctuary, about 89 km (about 1½ hours): blackbuck herds and migratory raptors from September to March.
- Salasar Balaji, about 73 km south on SH-7 (about 1¼ hours): one of Rajasthan's most visited Hanuman temples.
9. Sunset from a rooftop
End the day watching the sun go down over the desert. Jay Mahal Hotel & Resort has open-sky rooftop seating with views across the countryside, and an AC restaurant for dinner afterwards.
