October to March: the best season

After the monsoon, October days are still warm (about 36 °C), but nights cool down quickly. From November to February, afternoons are mild, between about 22 °C and 31 °C, which is perfect for darshan, havelis and day trips. December and January nights are cold, averaging about 6 °C. IMD records for Churu show lows down to −4.6 °C, and frost on water pots is not unusual.

This is also when migratory raptors visit Tal Chhapar sanctuary (September to March), and when most weddings in the region are held.

April to June: very hot

Heat builds quickly from April. May and June average over 41 °C in the afternoon, and Churu has recorded extremes of 50.8 °C (1–2 June 2019) and 50.5 °C (May 2024). If you must travel, plan darshan for early morning and after sunset, and spend afternoons indoors.

July to September: monsoon

Most of the year's roughly 426 mm of rain falls in July and August. Showers cool things down and turn the desert briefly green, but it stays humid and warm (highs of about 36–38 °C). Roads are generally fine, though low patches can waterlog after heavy rain.

Festivals and busy dates

  • Hanuman Jayanti (Chaitra, usually March–April): the biggest day at Ichhapuran Balaji Mandir.

  • Every Tuesday and Saturday: Balaji's days, with bigger temple crowds.
  • Wedding season (roughly November to February, following auspicious dates): book rooms and venues early.

What to pack

  • Winter: a warm jacket, shawl or sweater for mornings and nights. Days still need sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Summer: light cotton clothes, a cap or scarf, a refillable water bottle and ORS.
  • Monsoon: an umbrella and footwear that copes with puddles.
  • Year-round: modest clothing for temple visits, and socks for hot or cold temple floors.
