What you will see

The sanctuary is a flat, shallow saline depression (a 'tal') covered in grassland, with scattered acacia and prosopis trees, so it looks almost like a savanna. Blackbuck herds are the main attraction, and they are easiest to watch in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon.

From September to March, migratory raptors arrive, including the eastern imperial eagle, tawny eagle and short-toed eagle, along with demoiselle cranes, cream-coloured coursers and little green bee-eaters. Larks and doves live here all year.

A simple day plan

  1. Leave Sardarshahar at dawn and drive south on SH-7 to Ratangarh, then on to Chhapar.
  2. Spend the morning in the sanctuary, when wildlife is most active. A guided jeep safari helps you find the herds.
  3. Lunch in Chhapar or Ratangarh. Pilgrims can add Salasar Balaji on the way back.
  4. Be back in Sardarshahar by evening for darshan at Ichhapuran Balaji or sunset on the rooftop.
